A Monroe County woman faces a Sept. 12 sentencing after pleading guilty to embezzling more than $4,000 from a college scholarship fund founded in honor of an Army soldier killed in Iraq.
Renee Seger, 42, of Ida Township pleaded guilty Friday before Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Costello, Jr. to one count of embezzlement, and faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
The embezzled money came from a trust fund established to provide computer science scholarships to college students in memory of
Pfc. Nicholas Greer, 21, a member of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division killed while on duty in Iraq on Oct. 7, 2005. The fund was created from fundraisers held by Greer's mother, Kelly, in honor of her son, who was a graduate of Monroe Alternative High School.
Seger, who was a friend of the Greer family and a co-executive of the scholarship fund, took the money from the fund between April 2006 and February 2008 to pay for her bills and other personal expenses.
