About 150 Michigan National Guard Soldiers from the Greenville-based 1073rd Maintenance Company returned home to their family & friends Saturday. A homecoming ceremony took place at 10 am at the Greenville Armory. The soldiers were in Iraq supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. They departed in December 2009 for mission specific training at Camp Shelby, Miss., according to a news release, and performed numerous security and escort missions. In Spain, a judge has re-issued arrest warrants for three US soldiers over the killing of a Spanish TV cameraman who died in US tank fire in Iraq in 2003. Spain's National Court announced Thursday that it has re-issued an the arrest warrants because the soldiers are implicated in an attack on Baghdad's Hotel Palestine, where Jose Couso along with dozens of other journalists were based during the Iraq war, the Time reported. Spain's National Court dismissed the initial case, filed in May 2003, citing a lack of jurisdiction. But the higher Supreme Court review of the case in December 2006 returned it to the National Court, which in 2007 issued arrest warrants against Sgt. Thomas Gibson, Captain Philip Wolford, and Colonel Philip deCamp. A year later, the court again shelved the case, saying it had insufficient evidence to proceed with an investigation. However, on July 26, Spain's Supreme Court again ruled that the case should continue. On Thursday morning, the National Court took up the investigation for the third time, again ordering the three men to appear in its courtroom or face extradition. "Now we have to hope that the United States government collaborates with the Spanish justice system in the search and capture in order to sit these murderers in the court," Xinhua News quoted Jose's brother David as saying.
