COLCHESTER has been plunged into mourning again after a ninth soldier based in the town was killed in Afghanistan in just over seven weeks.
The soldier, a member of the 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment, died on Tuesday morning. He has yet to be named but next of kin have now been informed.
He was hit by a blast during a routine patrol that clashed with Taliban fighters in the troubled Helmand Province just before 9am.
During the encounter the soldier was seriously injured in an explosion and was airlifted out to receive medical treatment.
However, he died during the flight, becoming the 114th British soldier to die in Afghanistan since operations began in November 2001.
