Ten members of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment are currently serving with the 1st Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in the Contingency Operating Base (COB) in Iraq. In their first few weeks, the soldiers have been given front line experience of the battalion’s three main tasks – Operations, Quick Reaction Force and Force protection.

‘The conditions here have been characterised by very frequent and annoying dust storms coupled with temperatures up to a searing 56 degrees,’ said Lieutenant Tim Cumming. ‘Despite all this, we are all in high spirits.’ In Y Company, Tim Cumming has now stepped up to become the Company Second in Command for a number of operations out on the ground. Also in Y Company are Corporal John Pincho and Privates Karim Aouhar, Taron Bentley and Sean Caruana. One of their regular tasks has been to provide a Quick Reaction Force for convoys entering Basra City. Over in Z Company, Lance Corporal Jason Canepa and Privates Dyron Dalmedo, Gino Warren and Owen Jobburn have been just as busy. LCpl Canepa was chosen as part of a team providing close protection for a team of archaeologists working in an area north of Basra whilst Pte Dalmedo has completed his quad bike training and he is now one of the Company’s two quad bikers. Z Company spent a week deployed out in a remote close to the Iraq/Iran border where they have been providing protection to US teams manning the main border crossing point. Pte Dalmedo has made the most of his newly-acquired biking skills by ensuring that the Company had a daily delivery of essential stores. Elsewhere, Corporal Paul Tinkler has been working in Sniper Platoon, which tends to operate separately from the main Companies. The snipers often conduct clearance operations around the COB and they often use helicopters to drop them into their positions. Everyone has settled well into their routines and they are enjoying life with the Fusiliers.
