Pfc. Jennifer Cole dies of gunshot in Iraq

Pfc. Jennifer Cole died from a gunshot wound in Bayji, Iraq on Saturday in a noncombat incident that is under investigation, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Army Pfc. Jennifer Cole, 34, enlisted in the military a year ago and had been in Iraq since March. She was due to come home for an 18-day leave on Aug. 11, her mother said. During her service the military awarded her a number of honors. She received the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal and an Army Service Ribbon. An Army memorial service will be held for Cole in Iraq.
