A year after Sgt. 1st Class Justin Monschke earned a Silver Star for gallantry in Iraq, his brother, Denton firefighter Jarett Monschke, held a framed copy of it on his lap as he listened to "The Ballad of the Green Beret" and wept.
Justin wasn't there. The brother loved and admired was killed in action last October at age 28, before he could be honored with the star. Their mother, Patty Jett, asked the military if her dead son's brother could have the memorial, and the response was far more than she expected. "I thought they would mail it to me," Ms. Jett said. "They presented his father, his wife and me with one in Fort Bragg last week. I went up to the general afterward and told him that Jarett was a firefighter, and when he's not on shift he goes out to the cemetery every day. I told him he designed his brother's headstone. I asked him if Jarett could have a star and he said, 'Consider it done.' "|
