Family to greet body of Windsor soldier

September 5, 2008 in The Fallen

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean and Defence Minister Peter MacKay will be among the dignitaries joining grieving family members gathering from across the country Saturday night at CFB Trenton as a Canadian Forces aircraft returns the remains of Cpl. Andrew Grenon, 23, of Windsor and two comrades killed Wednesday in Afghanistan.

A large contingent of Grenon's close family members and friends caught the train in Windsor Friday on the journey to help greet the caskets of the three Canadian soldiers killed in a Taliban ambush west of Kandahar City.

After a repatriation ceremony following the expected 6 p.m. arrival of the aircraft, a motorcade will leave the base at approximately 7 p.m. for an estimated two-hour trip west on Highway 401 to Toronto. A growing number of people have been gathering on overpasses along the "Highway of Heroes" to wave flags and show their support to the fallen troops and their families who make up the procession, which is usually accompanied by a police escort.
