Family, friends and even strangers attended the funeral service for a local soldier killed in Afghanistan. U.S. Army Cpl. Matthew Phillips of Cumming was among nine American soldiers killed in action July 13 during a three-hour battle with Taliban militants at a remote base in Afghanistan's Kunar province. Cpl. Phillips was only weeks from completing his 15-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. Saturday, Cumming residents lined the streets leading to Coal Mountain Baptist Church holding American flags in order to show support during the soldier's funeral procession. He was buried at Coal Mountain Cemetery.
