Comrade brings fallen GI

For the next several days, U.S. Army Sgt. Joshua Parrish has just one painful but important task: to make sure Spc. Byron Fouty’s remains are safely returned to his family — first to Michigan, then on to Texas.

On Sunday, a private Leer jet landed at Oakland-Pontiac Airport, and Parrish, who served with Fouty in Iraq, brought Fouty’s casket to his stepfamily, who waited on the tarmac. Parrish then escorted the casket to a local funeral home, which will prepare the fallen soldier for visitation today and funeral Tuesday morning.

“It’s really hard,” said Parrish, 26, of St. Louis. “We shed a couple tears together.”

On Tuesday, pall bearers in full military dress will carry his casket into Brightmoor Christian Church at 408000 W. 13 Mile, where funeral rites will begin at 11 a.m.

About 17 soldiers from Fouty’s unit — the 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, N.Y. — flew to Michigan this weekend to serve as pall bearers and color guard.
