Family members are mourning the loss of two South Jersey soldiers who were killed in Iraq this week.
Capt. Gregory T. Dalessio, of Cherry Hill, died Monday in Salman Pak, near Baghdad, of wounds he suffered when his patrol met small arms fire during combat operations.
Dalessio was a 1996 graduate of Bishop Eustace Preparatory School in Pennsauken, N.J.
"I couldn't have asked for a better oldest child, he genuinely cared about his siblings," Dalessio's step-father Tom Pagano said.
Dalessio, 30, was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Baumholder, Germany.
Detective Sergeant First Class Dwayne M. Kelley, a decorated trooper and a ranking Army officer, was killed in an explosion in Sadr City. The explosion happened early Tuesday.
Kelley had been with the State Police since 1988 and during his career, he worked in Willingboro, New Jersey.
Kelley was serving his third tour of duty in Iraq. Three other soldiers were killed in the explosion.
A statement from Colonel Joseph R. Fuentes of the New Jersey State Police read in part: "He (Kelley) touched many lives throughout the law enforcement and military communities, and he will be deeply missed by us all."
Kelley was originally from Willingboro and leaves behind two daughters.
