The body of Exeter soldier Jason Barnes, 25, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, is expected to be flown home by the military on Monday.
As revealed in the Echo, Cpl Barnes, a married man from Stoke Hill, was driving an ambulance back to his Helmand base when the bomb exploded last Tuesday. Before he died, the former St James School pupil, who served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, had attempted to save the life of a comrade. Cpl Barnes was attached to 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment. His body is due to arrive at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, along with that of another soldier belonging to the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, who was killed in Helmand yesterday. Cpl Barnes was driving a Vector army ambulance back to base when it was hit by a suspected insurgent explosive device. Despite medics' efforts, he died a few minutes later.|
